The rock colossus
The road from Esquel to Gualjaina is a journey in itself, a journey of 90 km and infinite horizons. From this locality, the journey of about 30 km intertwines with the landscapes of the Gualjaina and Chubut rivers to reveal little by little the majesty of the environment of the Piedra Parada protected area. The rock colossus rises in the middle of the Chubut River valley, where nature reveals itself in all its grandeur and splendor.
Designated as a Natural Protected Area, Piedra Parada is a natural monument, the chimney of an ancient volcano. Millions of years ago, a volcanic eruption transformed this region forever. This event favored the origin of one of the most breathtaking landscapes that today marvels adventurers from all over the world.
Canyons, millenary caves and an infinite range of mineral colors give life to this corner of nature in the province of Chubut. This stone giant is also a challenge for experienced climbers, who see in its imposing structure an opportunity to test their skills. Visitors can enjoy hiking, bird watching, an outdoor lunch and the discovery of the geological and natural wealth of the place.
On the other side of the river, the Cañadón de la Buitrera offers a paradise for climbing and trekking lovers. It is a gorge with walls up to 150 meters high that rise on both sides, a refuge for the local fauna and testimony of past cultures that left their cave paintings on the stone.
Gualjaina is the last point with services before entering the protected area. Access from the road is possible, but to discover all its secrets and mysteries, nothing better than a guided excursion, where local experts share their knowledge and passion for this unique and majestic destination.
