Leaving from Gobernador Gregores, by the river Chico, you must travel 69 km. to the west along provincial route 29, with the aridity of Patagonia as your priviledged company.
The mytical route 40, the spine of the region, will finally appear. This turning to the south will lead you directly to lake Cardiel, a paradise where you can go fishing in the turquoise waters that stand out in the gray patagonian environment. Vehicles tracks and precarious fishermen shelters mingle with the white, black and pink touches of black necked swans and flamingos on the head of the lake, while mount El Puntudo insists in testimoning with its presence a very special history. The lake hides an enormous concentration of fish as a result of such history. It is worth knowing about it: in the year 1940, a plane transporting fingerlings to Lake Fagnano in Tierra del Fuego was caught by a storm; the risk implied by the delay to the precious load made the pilot take a decision: to set them free in the first water course they found, and so, before the fingerlings died, lake Cardiel became its new home. An infinity of fishing enthusiasts are thankful for this event, since it turned this unknown patagonian lake into a fishing paradise.
